Mahalia, Kojey Radical & Celeste at Oslo (25/03/2019)

AMP Sounds 2020 would have been happening last March.

Annie Mac AMP London 04 - 07 March 2020

But, of course, that didn’t happen. The show goes on…

AMP London 2018 & 2019 was amazing regardless, and maybe AMP 2021 will blow it out of the park!

It was a night of beautiful music in the cosy Oslo Hackney 10 month ago. In an upstairs intimate room packed with ambient buzzing from the crowd I got to see the wonderful PREP. It is still my favourite mini-venue and is at the top of my checklist to visit again if it is still around after lockdown.

The AMP roster consisted of the talented trio: Celeste, Kojey Radical and Mahalia, bringing a mix of soul, spirit and energy fulfilling our musical desires.

Celeste has been killing it lately in 2021! Number one album, Golden Globe nomination and Super Bowl ad. She’s rolling in the recognition, and deservedly so. A smooth voice that shifts and forms to the emotion of each song was outstanding to see up close.

She was joined by the saxy~ Kaidi Akinnibi and two members from the jazz-dripping Steam Down, one of whom just happened to go to the same secondary school as my companion Tee. He also formerly played in a band with my mate from football club. Ain’t the London music scene is a small world?

Next up was the raw and explosive performance by Kojey Radical that progressively shredded his clothes as it could not contain his energy. Each line he delivers is dripping with confidence that gets you bopping and feeling a certain way.

I believed I have thus failed to harp on and on about for my love for Mahalia. Shame on you, past self, for just mentioning her briefly in three other posts. She has gained much deserved popularity since I first discovered her back in 2017. As the penultimate act, she easily delivered silky honey vocals that you are bound to revisit over and over again.

The night perfectly wrapped with Mahalia and Kojey Radical as they joined forces on stage to perform the Swindle-produced beauty Water.

We left Olso feeling more energised and greater hunger to create much much more.

Stay safe and musically curious,
Salve S.

We will remain Live In Three.
